Optical brighteners are agents used by manufacturers to enhance the overall appearance of their garments by creating the “whitening effect”. This effect is created by absorbing light in the ultra violet and violet region of the electromagnetic spectrum and re-emit light in the blue region. Consequently, garments that contain optical brighteners will look less yellow than they would be without these agents.

It is important to understand that optical brighteners can decay over time from normal wear and repeated cleaning.

Garments must be constructed by the manufacturer to last a reasonable period of time. This means that optical brighteners must withstand the recommended cleaning process on the attached care label. Garments that do not withstand normal wear and/or cleaning should be returned to the manufacturer.
